Lab equiment and facilities include:
- a specialized library with more than 1000 titles obtained from research projects. The corresponding book catalogues are available on the Lab's webpage at the following link: http://synmorphose.gr/index.php/el/library-cat-gr/book-catalogs-cat-gr,
- specialized equipment (4 desktop computers, 1 laptop computer, printers, scanners, a voice analysis apparatus, digital voice recorders, an eye tracker device, etc.) for supporting research conducted by lab members.
- teaching material (projectors, speakers, web cameras).
Although the SynMorPhoSe Linguistics Lab has existed informally since 2010, it was officially established in 2015 (Greek Government Gazette 1057/5-6-2015). It also has its own page on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/SynMorPhoSe).
Currently, it includes 6 academic staff members, 2 specialized laboratory and teaching staff members, 5 Phd holders, 7 Phd students, 3 post-doctoral researchers and several external collaborators.
The Lab provides support for the linguistic courses of the Department of Greek Philology undergraduate studies programme as well as the interinstitutional programme for Specialization in IT and Special Education: Psychopedagogy of Inclusion.
Furthermore, it organizes seminars and lectures by Greek and foreign linguists, for the purpose of keeping its Phd candidates and undergraduate students up to date with current developments in the field, international conferences (Annex 9.6.1), as well as various linguistic events (reading motivations, creative writing, book reviews, etc.), especially in the field of applied linguistics (Annex 9.6.2) and since 2017, it has organized the "Poetry Equinox" event.
It also provides support to the department's Student Traineeship Programme. In that context, it has accepted a considerable number of students, training them at collecting and processing linguistic data that could be potentially presented in a conference.
From 2010 to 2017, it carried out the analyses of the teaching staff evaluation questionnaires.
Recently, it has concluded cooperation protocols with the NE Mediterranean Linguistics Lab of the Department of Mediterranean Studies of the University of the Aegean, as well as with the Centre of Byzantine, Modern Greek and Cypriot Studies of Granada.
The Lab implements its social responsibility policy:
- by providing academic support, through volunteering, to the social tutoring programs of the Municipality of Komotini and through the Philologus platform (http://philologus.duth.gr), where members of the D.U.Th community can submit texts, dissertations and articles for literary editing.
- by organizing reading events in the Open Care Center for the Elderly and the Municipal Library of Komotini, training seminars for teachers, as well as study visits to local schools. It also includes a creative writing and a reading motivation team.
SynMorPhoSe Lab - Rules and Regulations
The Lab's opening hours are defined and published at the beginning of each semester. During these hours, students may receive consultation, borrow books or use the Lab's computers for their work in linguistics studies. The respective list of books can be found on the Lab's website.
- The duration of book loans may not exceed three (3) days.
- Students may not borrow more than three (3) books at a time. In order to be able to borrow new material, students must return any previously borrowed items.
- Students must prove their identity by producing their student pass or ID card.
- The title and the id of each book as well as the name, the phone number, the address, and the student pass ID number are recorded on the respective loan card.
- Lost or damaged items shall be replaced at the cost of the borrower.
- Educational and other linguistics software installed on lab computers may be used by the students.
- Flash drives and other USB storage devices must be scanned for viruses before being connected to lab computers.
Zoe Gavriilidou was appointed as Lab Director by Decision 3/25-11-2015 of the Department of Greek Philology General Assembly.
In 2018, she was re-elected as Director for a second term.
The +MorPhoSe (SynMorPhoSe) laboratory of linguistics (syntax, morphology, phonetics and semantics) was founded at the beginning of academic year 2010-2011 and has as its main objective the dissemination of linguistic research as well as the exchange of scientific views within the academic community at the Department of Greek Philology of the Democritus University of Thrace.
It addresses the faculty members, PhD candidates, undergraduate students and the international scientific community. The laboratory of linguistics supports tuition in linguistics and organizes seminars and lectures for the PhD and undergraduate students delivered by Greek and foreign linguists. It also promotes activities of linguistic interest, particularly in the fields of applied linguistics, such as reading animation and creative writing workshops. Finally, it encourages work on research projects.
